The Starkville School District has taken steps in hopes of preventing any further punishment for Starkville High School football coach Jamie Mitchell after the events that occurred in last Friday's 49-19 victory by the Yellowjackets at Horn Lake.
With 7:33 left in the game, Mitchell was ejected by officials for arguing consecutive penalty calls by the referee with Starkville leading 42-13.
Mitchell said after the game that all he was questioning was the timing of the penalties in a blowout situation.
According to Starkville Athletic Director Stan Miller, a form was submitted by the SSD to the Mississippi High School Activities Association, along with letters from Miller and Mitchell with their account of what happened.
Miller was given an indication from MHSAA Deputy Director N.Z. Bryant that a ruling will be given by the middle of the week.
"If they uphold the ejection, we'll appeal it," Miller said. "We don't think they will uphold it, but if they do, we'll be down there asking for a hearing."
Miller said everything was spelled out in the letters with details about what Mitchell said and not using any profanity and explained the situation at the game where the Jackets were up by a large margin and the officials were still throwing penalty flags after the coaches met at halftime with the thought of speeding the game along.
"My thing with that is if the game gets out of hand, just let the clock run and these guys won't let you do that," Mitchell said after the game.
It was the first time Mitchell had ever been ejected from a game at any level during his coaching career.
