A Starkville man is in jail and facing multiple charges after being accused of firing on a police officer.

Michael Davidson, 35, was arrested on Saturday at Canterbury Townhouses in the 100 block of Old Mayhew Road at 8:30 p.m.

He was charged with burglary, two counts of assault on a police officer, two counts of shooting into a dwelling, breaking and entering, malicious mischief and aggravated assault on a police officer.

Lt. Brett Watson of the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office said there are three counts of assault on a police officer. Davidson fired his gun into the direction of the officer on the scene. The other two counts of assault stem from Davidson fighting with two correctional officers when he was brought to the Oktibbeha County Jail.

Watson told the Starkville Daily News deputies were first called to the scene due to a welfare concern. The officers were not able to make contact with Davidson upon arrival.

Deputies left the scene and a short time after leaving, a caller told the deputies they heard what sounded like a couple of gun shots.

"There were multiple shots being fired inside of Davidson's residence," Watson said.

Deputies encountered Davidson in the doorway of the residence.

"At that point (Davidson) fired two shots in the direction of the deputy," Watson said.

The deputy involved was not injured and the rounds fired damaged a nearby apartment. Watson said at some point during the encounter, Davidson ran out of ammunition and started to flee on foot into another person's apartment, where he was run out by the homeowner.

"(He) fled on foot from the deputies until they were able to take custody of him behind the apartments," Watson said.

Davidson is currently in the Oktibbeha County Jail with bond set at $865,000.
