Starkville struggles in Dizzy Dean World Series

July 26, 2010

SOUTHAVEN – After a strong Saturday start at the Dizzy Dean World Series, Starkville’s 8-year-old All-Stars ran into trouble Sunday.
Playing two games in Southaven, Starkville fell to East Cherokee, Ga., 8-1, then lost to in-state foe Saltillo 16-6.
“We played pretty early in the morning so I think everyone was tired and worn out,” said Starkville head coach Shane Grantham. “Overall, we just had a bad day.”
Starkville’s struggles came just one day after a dominating 18-4 win over Oregon Park, Ga., in their DDWS opener.
Sunday’s two losses now relegate Starkville to the consolation bracket of the tournament, beginning with an 11 a.m. game today against Batesville. A Starkville win would set up an 11 a.m. Tuesday game against a to-be-determined opponent. A defeat would end Starkville’s season.
Despite Sunday’s results, Grantham says his team is still in high spirits.
“They have their heads lifted up and are still having a great time,” said Grantham.
“They’re ready to get back out there and play again (today).”
