Starkville woman killed in early morning shooting at Walmart

The Starkville Police Department is actively investigating a deadly shooting that occurred at the Walmart Supercenter on Highway 12 in the morning hours Saturday.

SPD Chief Frank Nichols held a press conference near the crime scene, where he confirmed there was one female victim in the shooting, who was transported to OCH Regional Medical Center.

Oktibbeha County Coroner Michael Hunt identified the victim as 42-year-old Shauna Witt, who worked as a optometrist in Starkville. She arrived at the hospital with two gunshot wounds at 9:58 a.m. and was pronounced dead at 10:05 a.m.

Nichols said officers responded to a shots fired call at Walmart around 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning. When they arrived on scene, they encountered an armed white male. After a brief struggle, the suspect was detained and is in custody.

The suspect in the shooting has not been identified at this point.

The store is closed while the investigation continues.
