SOUTHAVEN – Starkville's run in the Mississippi High School Activities Association Division III volleyball playoffs came to a premature end Saturday.
The Lady Yellowjackets, playing a first round matchup on the road against DeSoto Central, fell 3-1.
SHS opened the match by dropping the first set 25-9, recovered for a 25-21 triumph in set two, and fell 25-17 and 25-14 in sets three and four respectively.
"We just struggled to find momentum early with our serves and DeSoto Central went on a run," said Starkville coach Lauren Love. "As the match went on, we started to relax and were able to get a few big points thanks to big blocks and some hustle digs. The scoring went back and forth but we just came up short."
Wheeler Richardson led the Lady Jackets in assists (10), while also getting 11 digs and five points.
McKay Richardson recorded a team-high 14 digs, plus 10 points, four aces, and three kills.
Khristian Carr paced Starkville with seven kills to go along with four solo blocks, two block assists, and three digs.
Elizabeth Scott put forth a nine dig, three kill performance, Rebecca Myles notched six kills and three solo blocks, and Tierra Tillman had a block assist.
Grace Drumheller and Priyanka Parajuli each had six digs.
Margaret Allison tallied a kill and a block assist.
The Lady Jackets, who entered the playoffs as the Region 2 runner-up, ended their season with a record of 20-10.
"The girls played hard all year," said Love. "We're just really proud of the girls and really proud of the program."
