Editorâs note: The following is information from Tuesday nightâs Starkville School District Board of Trustees meeting that was unable to be published in Wednesdayâs newspaper due to space limitations.
Starkville School District students participating in the Studio School summer camp saw marked progress in their academic performance, the programâs leader says
Studio School Director Kay Brocato updated the SSD Board of Trustees on the progress of the Studio School program after the conclusion of the second year of its summer camp. She explained that this was the first year for SSD students participated in the camp.
Brocato said that 14 of the 17 students in the program have increased their Mississippi Curriculum Test scores, and all of them felt they have improved greatly.
Brocatoâs presentation addressed the goals of Studio School â increase school engagement, improve academic performance, increase positive future perspective (of school) and build stronger social-emotional stability.
Currently, the program is seeking funding from federal sources.
Also on Tuesday night, the SSD board heard a request from student Jack Bryan regarding the naming of the tennis pavilion he built for his Eagle Scout project. Bryan explained that he wishes the pavilion will be named Parvin-Henderson Pavilion after the first coaches he had as a freshman tennis player.
âI thoroughly enjoyed the dedication they had for the team,â Bryan said of his coaches.
The board approved Bryaâs request.
The board also approved the following items under new business:
â˘ A quote from FL Crane and Sons, Inc. to replace the tread of the stairwells in Armstrong in the sum of $14,145.
â˘ A low big from Sherman Exteriors to pressure wash the Greensboro Center and to resurface the steps with a non-slip surface.
â˘ A contract between the SSD and the City of Starkville to provide police protection at athletic events. Couey explained that previously there was no contract and officers were paid their regular hourly salary. Now, with the contract, there will be a base fee, which will save the district money.
â˘ An agreement to use Overstreet School as an alternative school.
â˘ The 2010â2011 fundraisers.
â˘ The 2010â2011 fees charged.
The board approved the following staffing recommendations, resignations, terminations, retirements and changes of status:

â˘ Randy Carlisle to be a bus driver effective Aug. 5.
â˘ Randy Carlisle to be a science teacher at Armstrong effective Sept. 8.
â˘ Michelle Garraway to work under the 21st Century Learning Grant for Family-Centered Programs effective Sept. 8.
â˘ Tiffany Gray to be a teacher at Sudduth effective Sept. 4.
â˘ Felicia Jones to be a GED teacher assistant at Overstreet School effective Aug. 4.
