Wolverines look to keep momentum

July 26, 2010

The East Webster Wolverines hope the momentum generated from their Class 2A playoff run in 2009 carries over into this season.
East Webster finished with a 7-7 record last season with a strong finish.
After defeating West Lowndes 24-0 to close the regular season, the Wolverines knocked off Coahoma County 33-8 and Calhoun City 28-14 before losing a 14-12 decision to Ackerman.
That positive ending gives East Webster coach Jimmy Carden something to build on as his squad prepares for its first practice of the preseason today.
“We hope everything comes back together like it did at the end of the season last year,” Carden said. “We should be fairly competitive.”
The Wolverines are scheduling one practice in the afternoons because of the challenge of getting all of the players together prior to school starting.
Carden is looking to get quite a bit of conditioning work in early and doesn’t want to use the heat as an excuse for not working hard.
“We don’t talk about (the heat) and just get ready to play football,” Carden said. “We don’t mention that word and realize it’s just part of living in Mississippi. We go to work and get ready to play.
“We’re going to have a good time. We’re going to get excited.”
