A Starkville resident who was reported last week as armed and dangerous has been detained and is now in Oktibbeha County Jail.
Authorities from Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office arrested Sammie Bernard Reed, 42, of 1507 Louisville St. May 11 at a convenience store near the Mississippi-Alabama state line.
Reed allegedly robbed a resident of the Sandhill Arms apartment complex on Louisville Street May 8. SPD Detective Stephanie Perkins said Reed used a revolver and stole $70 from the victim. Reed was out on bond from an April 6 arrest in which SPD charged him with false pretense. He already had a warrant for his arrest for missing the hearing for that charge. He was also arrested in September 2011 and charged with robbery.
Perkins said LCSO received a tip that Reed was at the convenience store. While she could not confirm the name of the store, she said Reed did not attempt to flee or use force. He was detained without incident.
Perkins said SPD received the call from LCSO at approximately 8 p.m. informing the department of the arrest.
“We’d like to give a special thanks to Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, Columbus Police Department and Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s office for assisting us in his arrest,” Perkins said. “If it weren’t (for them) catching him, he would have crossed state lines.”
SPD Chief David Lindley said the arrest is an example of how help from citizens can be critical in ensuring their safety.
“This shows that it is really important to have public assistance to make us successful at what we do,” Lindley said. “In this particular case, the individual had become a danger to himself and others, and we’re glad to have him in custody.”
