The Starkville Academy girls' basketball team has had some time to take in all it has accomplished this year.
The Lady Volunteers took the Class AAA, Division II State championship, the Class AAA State title and the MAIS overall State crown this year.
On Thursday night at the Veranda Restaurant, it was time for Starkville Academy to celebrate once again as the members of the team and coaching staff were presented State championship rings.
"I guess it is reality now that we are getting the rings," senior point guard Anna Prestridge said.
The Lady Vols finished the season with a 38-5 record.
"There will be other teams and other trophies but what we have right now will be more important than we ever know," SA head coach Glenn Schmidt said.
The Lady Vols had a banquet last week, but the rings did not come in time for them to be presented. The parents got together and decided to give the girls a special night.
"It is a really special night," Schmidt said. "The parents got together and had this for them in a special setting so we wouldn't have to hand the rings to them at school."
For Prestridge and the other seniors, this year was more than a championship season.
"It is a very big deal for the seniors because it is our last chance to ever play as a team together," Prestridge said. "This was a really special year for us.
"It will be a big deal to wear it on graduation night because it was a big part of this year."
Schmidt and Prestridge were chosen Starkville Daily News Coach of the Year and Player of the Year respectively.
"It has gotten more and more meaningful as time as gone on," Schmidt said.
Schmidt gets back to coaching this summer as the Lady Vols will participate in summer tournaments and leagues, but this year meant a lot to her and it will be something she will never forget.
"What else would a coach want," Schmidt joked.
Prestridge and the other seniors will go their separate ways.
"This is very special," Prestridge said. "It is something that we worked so hard for and it's finally paying off."View more articles in:
