State's Holder sees scoreless-inning streak end

June 3, 2012

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Freshman relief pitcher Jonathan Holder had pitched 27.1 innings without giving up a run. That is the best a pitcher has started a career at Mississippi State.

Holder gave up two runs on back-to-back hits in the top of the seventh in a 3-2 loss to Samford Sunday at the Tallahassee Regional.

Samford's Phillip Ervin singled and was driven in by double by Brandon Miller.

"That was definitely a mistake," Holder said. "Give him credit, he jumped all over it and put the barrel where he wanted it. He did what any good hitters would do and took advantage of it."

That run was earned. An unearned also scored on Holder when C.K. Irby hit it to third and reached on a throwing error by Sam Frost. Miller scored on the play.

Bulldogs to 40 wins

Mississippi State ended the season with a 40-24 mark.

The last time the Bulldogs had 40 wins was 2005 when they held a record of 42-22.

Legendary head coach Ron Polk was still coaching, the Bulldogs won the Southeastern Conference Tournament and made it to the Coral Gables Regional that season.

During the drought, MSU had highs of 38 two times and 37 wins once.

Renfroe gets his 10th assist

Centerfielder Hunter Renfroe threw out C.K. Irby at the plate to end the fourth inning for his 10th assist of the year.

Slauter extends hitting streak

Junior catcher Mitch Slauter extended his personal-best six-game hitting streak when he singled with two outs in the sixth inning. Slauter went 1-for-4 for the day.

Double play machine

Mississippi State turned its 71st double play of the season.
Samford's Irby hit it to second baseman Matthew Britton who tossed it to Adam Frazier who threw it to Wes Rea for a 4-6-3 double play.
The 71 double plays leads the nation.

Lindgren gets second start

Freshman pitcher Jacob Lindgren got his second start of the year and second start in 10 days.

The left handed pitcher got a start on May 25th at Regions Park in the SEC Tournament.

The Bulldogs won that game 3-2 with a walk-off hit in the 10th inning.
Lindgren went four innings, gave up one run on eight hits, walked one batter and struck out three. He threw 60 pitches.
