A suspect in a shooting Monday at Camelot Apartments is in custody after he turned himself in to Starkville Police Department authorities Tuesday.
Willie J. Hogan, 24, of 2084 Sheppard St. in Starkville, is currently held in Oktibbeha County Jail on a $40,000. He was charged with aggravated assault and shooting into an occupied dwelling. SPD dispatchers confirmed he turned himself in at approximately 6 p.m.
Gregory Dowd, 24, of 1040 North Montgomery St., apartment 12, was shot in the chest during the incident. He is being treated at OCH Regional Medical Center and is listed in good condition, SPD officials said.
SPD Lt. Troy Outlaw said officers responded to a shooting at the complex at approximately 8 p.m., and shots were still being fired when they arrived. He confirmed SPD officers did not fire their weapons. SPD Detective Stephanie Perkins said the initial 911 call was placed at 8 p.m.
He said approximately shots were fired from the complex’s parking lot, some of which into the apartments of innocent bystanders. Officers retrieved three shell casings taken out of a bystander’s apartment as well as the victim’s shirt.
Outlaw said whether or not Hogan acted alone is not yet confirmed.
“As far as we know right now there is only one shooter,” Outlaw said before the arrest. “With that much chaos at the scene, whether he had an (accomplice) with him, we’re not sure of that.”
Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s deputies assisted in securing the scene, OCSD Chief Deputy Chadd Garnett said.
Further details about the shooting, including what started the incident and whether or not the victim played an active role, was unknown at press time.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call SPD at 662-323-4135.
