Day three of the MLB First-Year Player Draft saw a pair of Bulldog pitchers hear their names called when Nick Routt and Kendall Graveman were selected.

The junior lefty Routt, who had a 3-5 record with a 3.80 ERA in 2012, was drafted in the 16th round by the Cincinnati Reds. For his career Routt compiled 12-12 record with a 4.06 ERA in 50 appearances.

Routt averaged nearly a strikeout per inning with 196 strikeouts in 207 innings of work. And during his freshman season he turned in four complete games, earning a spot on the SEC all-freshman team.

Right-hander Kendall Graveman was taken in the 36th round by the Miami Marlins.  The Alexander City, Ala. native had a 4-4 record for his junior season with a 2.81 ERA.

“It is just a humbling experience to have you’re name called,” said Graveman. “I was actually on the golf course when I got the call, I just couldn’t be happier.”

Graveman led the MSU staff with 16 starts in 2012, recording 59 strikeouts in 89.2 innings pitched. He registered the first complete game in the SEC in 2012 with a route-going victory in a series-finale at LSU.
For his career Graveman is 11-8 with one save and a 4.03 career earned run average. He managed 118 strikeouts in 49 appearances and 196.1 innings of work. Graveman was named to the 2012 SEC All-Defensive Team this year, marking the first such honor for a Diamond Dog since the league initiated the defensive all-star unit in 2008.

“There will be a decision to be made at some point, but I’ve enjoyed Mississippi State and what they’ve done for me,” Graveman said. “Getting my degree in Mechanical Engineering is important to me but we will have to make the decision that is best for me and my family.”

They join fellow junior Chris Stratton as players taken in the draft this season. Stratton was selected with the 20th pick of the first round by the San Francisco Giants on Monday.
