Mississippi State received big news, both literally and figuratively, on Sunday afternoon when 6-foot-4, 315-pound Deon Mix committed to be a Bulldog.

Mix, who holds 23 offers from some of the top football programs in college football, made his decision official when he met with head coach Dan Mullen shortly before his time at MSU camp.

“I just told him I was ready to be a Bulldog,” said a smiling Mix. “He was as excited as I am.”

Coming from South Panola, Mix explained Mississippi State has been at the top of his list since the Bulldogs first started recruiting him during his sophomore season with the Tigers.

“This is where my heart has been since I’ve been recruited by Mississippi State," Mix said. "I love it down here. It is a big family. I love the competitiveness here. I love the SEC anyway and I just felt at home down here.”

As recently as a couple of weeks ago, Mix claimed he wasn’t sure where he was going and would simply let the process run its course.

However, Sunday he explained he was just playing a little cat and mouse.

“I was just hiding it," Mix said. "I’ve been knowing where I’m going. I was just keeping it a secret and it is out there now. I’m a Bulldog.”

Going into the tradition-rich program of South Panola for a commitment is a big feat for Mullen and the Bulldogs. The Batesville-based high school is a place State hasn’t had a tremendous amount of success recruiting.

Last season, Kendrick Market signed with the Bulldogs setting the table for Mix to follow his former teammate.

“I just love it down here," Mix said. "This is where I wanted to be instead of being pressured into going somewhere."

With his decision behind him Mix is set to focus on the task at hand, winning a title for South Panola.

“This is big because now I can just focus on another national championship, state championship and getting better for my team," Mix said.
