Junior Lady Vols take opportunity to play the game

June 22, 2012

The Starkville Academy Junior Lady Volunteers are taking advantage of every opportunity possible to sharpen up their basketball skills.

According to SA coach Kayla Mosley, that's what it's going to take for the Junior Lady Vols to improve their game.

"They've just got to get into the gym and start shooting a little bit more," Mosley said. "We've been doing some work on our gym so we haven't been able to get in there and shoot. During the year, we do a lot of that, getting in there and letting them shoot on their own. I hope they will continue to shoot in the month of July, get in here (Starkville Sportsplex) and play a little bit on their own so they are not so rusty when they come back in August."

Mosley's team was in action Friday afternoon at the Starkville Sportsplex as they continue to participate in the summer high school league.

There was encouragement coming from Mosley after seeing her squad defeat Oak Hill Academy 28-24.

"We've got a good group of athletic girls," Mosley said. "There's not a whole lot of size so we've got to run, get up and down the floor, press and change things up a little bit. I'm really excited about the group that we have. They are very enthusiastic and love this game. It's fun to coach a group like that."

The Lady Junior Vols have a group of 9th graders led by point guard Adrienne Futral returning with sixth 8th graders added to the mix.

Along with playing in the Starkville summer league, the SA junior high girls attend camps and have play days scheduled in Nettleton.

"We try to stay real busy in the month of June and then try to give them July off," Mosley said.

(Editor's Note: This is a story in a series highlighting local basketball teams participating in the summer league at the Starkville Sportsplex. Other teams are scheduled to be featured throughout the summer.)
