Starkville High School athletic director Stan Miller announced on Monday that the school won the The Clarion-Ledger All-Sports Trophy Award for 2011-12 in Class 5A.
The Yellowjackets scored 397 points to out-distance Oxford's total of 373.5 and only trailed Tupelo (437.5) and Madison Central (431) for the overall All-Sports Trophy.
"Coaches and players are what wins All-Sports Trophies," Miller said. "I can't say enough about our coaches and players."
Miller plans to have a cookout to celebrate with players and coaches later this year. Even though there's not an actual trophy presented to the school that gains All-Sports recognition, Miller said there will be a trophy made to signify what the athletic department has accomplished.
The Starkville Daily News plans to visit with Miller later this week and discuss in more detail how his department reached this status in the little over two years he's been on the job.
