Incoming freshmen opt to depart MSU football program

The Mississippi State Bulldogs will enter fall camp down a pair of scholarship athletes with the departure of incoming freshmen Nick Schuessler and Adarrius Perkins.

Schuessler is a 6-4, 190-pound quarterback from Loaganville, Ga. He had arrived on the MSU campus for the first session of summer school after leading Grayson High School to a 15-0 record and a state championship.

"It's very tricky because I'm very picky in quarterbacks because what I look for in a quarterback, you can't see on film," Mullen said on signing day. "When you get to Nick, the first thing everybody at his high school described him as was the ultimate winner.”

As a senior, he threw for over 1,800 yards and 20 touchdowns and selected the Bulldogs over MTSU among others.

Haling from Forrest County Agricultural High School, Perkins earned an MSU offer after having a good camp session last summer. The 6-1, 207-pound athlete carried the ball 31 times for 193 with six scores while catching 22 passes for 475 yards and six additional touchdowns last season for FCAHS.

The Bulldogs will officially enter their summer workouts on July 5 with the beginning of the second session of summer school and will open fall camp on August 2.

MSU drops Valley
from 2013 schedule

Mississippi State has officially canceled the 2013 football showdown with the Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State.

The two Magnolia State programs were set to open next year’s football season but due to a NCAA rule that will not allow Football Bowl Subdivision teams to count more than one win over a FCS team that doesn’t meet the NCAA’s financial aid requirements, the game will now not take place.

At this point, the Bulldogs don’t have a replacement game in place but have a gameplan for having something in place soon.

"We have a good idea what direction we are headed with the replacement game in 2013,” said MSU athletic director Scott Stricklin said.

In recent years, Mississippi State has made an effort to schedule the state’s historically black universities and will open the 2012 season with a game against Jackson State.
