OCSD names new assistant admin

July 1, 2012

The Oktibbeha County School Board will introduce a new assistant superintendent at its meeting at 6 p.m. Monday at the district’s main office.

James Covington, OCSD superintendent, said Kathi Wilson will start as assistant superintendent on Monday and will appear at Monday night’s meeting. Previously, Wilson was assistant superintendent for the Holmes County School District based in Lexington, he said, and before that, she was principal of Starkville High School.

“She comes to us with a lot of experience, on the school level as well as at the central office level,” Covington said. “When she was at SHS, she consistently made that school a high level 4 ... for several years. She’ll bring a wealth of experience as well as knowledge to the OCSD.”

Wilson replaces Jerome Smith, who retired as assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and assessment this year after 41 years in education.

Covington said one item not on the board’s agenda is the Oktibbeha County Lake. At its June meeting, the OCSD board voted unanimously to re-advertise for proposals for the lake with a new deadline of July 31, and as a result, Covington said further lake discussion will likely wait until the August meeting.

Another significant item Covington said will not come until August is the school’s budget.

“We’re needing numbers from the tax assessor’s office so we can complete the budget process,” Covington said. “That probably won’t be available until after July, I think. We’re not quite ready to deal with the budget issue just yet. “

Covington said the board will also approve a professional development handbook for the upcoming school year, which teachers will use to prepare before students arrive. Other items he said the board will address include propane bids, an insurance bid, an agreement between Institute of Community Services, Inc. and the OCSD, and other general school business.
