Pitts receives spirit award at national DYW finals

July 2, 2012

Starkville and Mississippi’s Distinguished Young Woman of 2011 Mallory Pitts competed for the title of America’s Distinguished Young Woman last week in Mobile, Ala.

While Christina Maxwell, North Carolina’s DYW, was named the Distinguished Young Woman of America, Pitts was presented a $1,000 fitness scholarship and won the $1,000 DYW Spirit Award sponsored by the Distinguished Alumnae.

The Spirit Award is given to the young woman who best represents the spirit and ideals the DYW program holds by her fellow contestants. Pitts claimed the Spirit Award at both the local and state level competitions.

Formerly known as the Junior Miss Scholarship Program, Distinguished Young Women was founded in 1958 in Mobile, Ala. and is the largest and oldest national scholarship program for high school girls.
The organization’s mission is to positively impact the lives of young women across the country by providing an experience that promotes and rewards scholarship, leadership and talent.

DYW adopted its platform, the Be Your Best Self Program, in 1987 as a way to incorporate a positive, personal approach into working with young people to encourage self-esteem, helping them successfully deal with the challenges they face.

The Be Your Best Self Program teaches five key principles: be healthy, both physically fit and drug free; be involved, serving the community; be studious, staying in school and valuing education; be ambitious, setting and achieving goals; and be responsible, living by moral and ethical principles.

Holly Travis, daughter of Rickey and Cynthia Travis, will represent Starkville at the 2013 Mississippi Distinguished Young Woman competition July 19-21, 2012 in Meridian at the historic Temple Theater.

Travis will perform a dance routine to “That’s it, I quit” by Adele, choreographed by Haritha Abbott.
Travis is a member of the Academy of Competitive and Performing Arts.
