Starkville to host state tournament: 10-year old Dizzy Dean event at McKee Park

July 2, 2012

It's tournament time this week in Starkville.

Among all of the Dizzy Dean State Tournaments that take place around Mississippi, the 10-year-olds gather in Starkville to compete for a state title.

There are 15 teams involved in an event that begins Thursday at McKee Park and continues through possibly Monday.

Ron Mitchell, who is the co-director of the tournament along with Danny Carlisle, likes the strong field for the tournament.

"The competition is going to be fantastic," Mitchell said. "You are not going to have any bad teams in state tournament. I would like to tell the people of Starkville that if they want to see some good baseball, come out to McKee Park starting Thursday and there will be plenty of baseball. We've got two fields going all day long from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m."

Columbus American plays Union and Houston takes on Mathiston to begin play at 10 a.m. Thursday. Starkville's first game comes against Winona at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The other squads participating are West Point, Calhoun City, Hamilton, Columbus National, Eupora, Caledonia, Ackerman and Clinton.

With so many teams, the potential economic impact for Starkville is obvious, "especially the restaurants," Mitchell said.

There's a tremendous demand for Mitchell and the officials to prepare the right way.

"Things are going pretty well right now," Mitchell said. "We're trying to get the fields ready to go. We're starting Thursday and hope to be done on Monday. It's been a busy couple of weeks trying to get all of this going."

Mitchell expressed his gratitude for everyone that has helped from volunteers to sponsors.

"We've got many people helping us and I can't even remember them all," Mitchell said. "We sold some sponsorship signs and we want to thank those people for helping us on the front end. We want to make a general thank you for everyone that's helped, donated and sponsored."
