Starkville Community Theater unveils its newest summer musical tonight with the premiere of “SCT: Unplugged” at 7:30 p.m. in downtown Starkville.
Director Carole Sorenson said the musical has a different feel compared to previous years, but audiences will be excited about the music selected.
“It’s quite a mix of music,” Sorenson said. “I can guarantee there is something for everybody.”
Sorenson said the musical’s band has been rehearsing since early February while the cast began working in late May.
“People can expect to hear songs from James Taylor, The Eagles, Jim Croce and Glen Campbell,” she said. “We even have some gospel numbers.”
The “SCT: Unplugged” band features: John Brocato on guitar, Jim Beaty on bass, Carole Sorenson on piano, Drew Dieckmann on guitar, Vinny Brocato on drums and Marcus Vowell on guitar.
Sorenson said the idea for “SCT: Unplugged” started forming last year at the end of SCT’s 2011 summer musical “Liner Notes.”
“John (Brocato) and I were actually joking around one night last summer about having a show that was just about music,” she said. “No set changes, no tap dancing — just great songs performed by a great cast of vocalists and musicians.”
The entire 16-member cast remains on stage throughout the duration of the show, performing songs that run the gamut of musical styles.
“Not to give away any of the big secrets, but my favorites are always the James Taylor songs,” she said. “I’m also a big fan of ‘Let the River Run’ by Carly Simon.”
Sorenson said ticket holders should come prepared to have an amazing experience.
“You won’t be able to stop yourself from singing along, and some may have to get up and dance,” she said. “John and I couldn’t have asked for a better project to fill the summer.”
The summer musical is performed annually as a fundraiser for each new theater season.
Tickets are on sale for $25 which includes the performance and a champagne and dessert reception following the show.
