Mississippi State gets baseball commitment

July 30, 2012

Coach John Cohen and the Mississippi State Diamond Dogs continue to ride the momentum of their Southeastern Conference Tournament Championship.

State picked up its seventh commitment of the 2013 signing class on Monday in right hander Avery Geyer.

The Pensacola, Fla. hurler recently made a trip to Starkville where he fell in love with Mississippi State and the baseball program.

"I committed to Mississippi State (Monday)," said Geyer. "I like the direction that the program is headed and I wanted to be a part of that. It seems like Coach Cohen has the program climbing in the standings and I want to be there when they win a national championship.

"With the history that they have at Mississippi State, it's just an incredible honor that they were recruiting me. I just want to come in, work hard and try to live up to the incredible tradition that they have at Mississippi State."

For Geyer, the process from start to finish happened rather quickly for the 5-11, 195-pounder.

"I was at the 17u perfect game show case and coach (Nick) Mingione was there and saw me pitch," he said. "He sent some video to coach (Butch) Thompson and they invited me for a visit. I went to visit and was blown away by everything. The facilities are all first class. This is a dream come true for me. I am glad I can come in and help the Bulldogs win a championship."

While the facilities, tradition and Cohen play large roles in his decision, it was the opportunity to work with Thompson that sealed the deal.

"There is no doubt that coach Butch Thompson is a great coach," he said. "I know for a fact that he knows everything about pitching and can help me get to where I want to go. I will come in my freshman year and work hard out of the pen, then I will work hard over the summer and hopefully be in the rotation by my sophomore season."
