Starkville Academy loses 25-14 on road

September 1, 2012

SENATOBIA – The Starkville Academy Volunteers couldn't get a 14-12 half-time lead to stand up and lost a 25-14 decision to Magnolia Heights School on Friday night.

Starkville Academy, which fell to 1-2, won the statistical battle, but it did not equal out to a victory on the scoreboard.

The Vols had 300 yards of total offense and 16 first downs, while holding the Chiefs to 243 total yards and 11 first downs.

Magnolia Heights got a big night from running back Fernando VanHook, who was pretty much the difference in the game.

VanHook rushed for 158 yards and three touchdowns to out-score Starkville Academy by himself.

The first touchdown for VanHook, a 68-yard run on the first play of the game, put the Chiefs on top 6-0.
The Vols responded with a 45-yard touchdown run by quarterback Drew Pellum. The extra point by Johnathon Burton gave SA a 7-6 advantage.

Starkville Academy stretched the margin to 14-6 on a 13-yard scoring run by Michael Miller and another PAT by Burton.

Magnolia Heights closed the gap to 14-12 by halftime on a 15-yard run by VanHook, then his final touchdown, a 24-yarder in the third quarter, gave the Chiefs a 18-14 lead.

The home team put the finishing touches on the victory with a 13-yard pass in the fourth quarter.

Pellum was productive on offense for the Vols with 131 yards rushing on 21 carries and completed 6-of-14 pass attempts for 63 yards. Zach Slaughter added 47 yards on the ground on 12 carries.

Stephen Robertson and Drew Harrell were credited with good defensive performances for SA.
The Vols try to end a two-game losing streak next week when they host Leake Academy.
