Lady Jackets win volleyball match at home in straight sets

September 6, 2012

The Starkville High School volleyball team reached its 10th win of the season Thursday night and has been the case in several recent matches, it came in straight sets.

Starkville swept New Hope 25-14, 25-13 and 25-22 at the Beehive.

Even though the Lady Yellowjackets did not drop a set, there were things during the match that coach Lauren Love noticed her team was a little off.

Love experienced with different lineups in advance of Saturday's tournament in Southaven.

"We weren't connected in preparation for this weekend's tournament," Love said. "We adjusted well, but it's just sometimes you are a little off and we were a little off (Thursday) night. There were times we were on and have scoring runs."

Love said it was "great" for SHS to get a win against an "athletic and aggressive' squad like New Hope.

The Lady Jackets started the match slow, but were able to come back to take the first two sets with ease. They battled from eight points down in the third set to win.

"We were down by eight points and were able to chip our way back," Love said. "It's those serve and pass runs we need to get on."

Jamiyah Covington led Starkville with five digs and added an ace, while Kris Carr paced the attack with four kills and served two aces. Stacie Young had two kills, while Michaela Mills had four digs, two kills and four aces.

"We started off slow in our first game, but we picked it up and our energy was great," Mills said about the Lady Jackets. "I'm really proud of us."
