Kate Mattox may be young, but that hasn't stopped her from competing against high school runners on the various cross country courses around the state.

On Saturday, the 8th grader Mattox finished first with a time of 14:52 at the Mississippi Horse Park just outside of Starkville on the Mississippi State course.

She led the Starkville High School girls team to a second overall finish behind Madison Central who took first.

"Kate is a go-getter," SHS coach Caroline Woomer said. "She trains hard. I have to hold her back. I want to take care of her body so she can run in college and so she can continue to get the best time possible for herself."

Kate's sister, Walker, finished seventh with a time of 15:55. Right behind her was Shanika Musser with an eight place finish with a time of 16:57.

For the boys squad, it finished second as well behind Germantown.
Joseph MacGown led the Yellowjackets with a first place finish. He finished with a time of 16:58.

Damian Grady placed second with a time of 17:10. The senior has been highly motivated this year and has been doing his best to be the vocal and emotional leader for the Jackets.

"He has really stepped up this year," Woomer said of Grady. "He motivated the team before we started (Saturday)."

Alex Ross took eighth place with a time of 18:12 and Stuart Woomer finished 10th in 18:23.

"I am proud of what they accomplished (Saturday)," Woomer said. "We are right where I want us to be."

Woomer is also the girls track and field coach and has already took teams that competed at events hosted by Mississippi State. She has always enjoyed the hospitality and the effort MSU puts forth. That was no different with this meet.

"Mississippi State held a great meet," Woomer said. "They did an excellent job."

The Yellowjackets will run again in two weeks when they travel to Corinth on Sept. 29.
