GALLMAN â€“ Michael Miller scored a pair of early rushing touchdowns and the Starkville Academy Volunteers were off and running in winning their second Class AAA-District 2 game of the season over Copiah Academy 40-0 Friday night.
Miller, who had 44 yards on nine carries, had touchdown runs of 1 and 27 yards in the first quarter and the Vols took a 14-0 lead with two Johnathon Burton extra-point kicks.
Starkville Academy capped the scoring in the opening quarter on a team block of a punt went out of the end zone for a safety.
In the second quarter, Burton added a 23-yard field goal, Drew Harrell had a 23-yard interception return and Drew Pellum tossed a 21-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Bolin as the Vols took a commanding 33-0 advantage at halftime.
The other score for SA in the game was a 6-yard run by Pellum in the fourth quarter.
Colby Runnels was the leading rusher for the Vols as he added 67 yards on nine carries to what Miller did. Zach Slaughter contributed 37 yards rushing on six carries and added 26 additional yards with two catches from Pellum.
Pellum has four completions for 55 yards through the air.
As a team, Starkville Academy had 245 yards of total offense with 190 coming on the ground.
The Vols benefitted from four turnovers by the Copiah Academy offense.
Kirby Cox, Stephen Roberson and Harrell led SA defensively.
After improving their records to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference, the Vols turn their attention to another road game next week at Parklane Academy at McComb.View more articles in:
