The Starkville Academy girls soccer team believes it is heading into the Class AAA-Division 2 playoffs with some momentum.

After defeating Copiah Academy 11-0 in the final regular season match at the Starkville Sportsplex, the Lady Volunteers do enter the postseason on somewhat of a roll.

Starkville Academy soccer coach Robert Gardner has noticed the upbeat attitude in training prior to today's 4 p.m. match at Pillow Academy.

Gardner said the team has treated each section of the season (preseason, regular season and now the playoffs) as "a platform for what we can to do."

"I don't think we can be more prepared than we are at the moment," Gardner said. "It's certainly positive in our camp. The way we finished the regular season was good and positive, so we're looking to go into (today) and get a good result."

The Lady Vols finished the regular season with records of 7-9 overall and 4-4 in the conference.

After losing a 2-0 decision to Presbyterian Christian and having an easy victory against Copiah Academy, Gardner just wants to see SA go into the meeting with Pillow with a good performance.

"At the end of the day it's a matter of game-planning," Gardner said. "That's what we discussed in the meeting and talked about (Monday). We need to execute in order to have success, get in the best position possible and be able to take our chances from there. That's what we want to do."

With seniors Tiffany Huddleston, Tiffany Evans, Jessica Dennis, Garland Willdcut and Emilie Sanders, the Lady Vols look to make a deep run into the playoffs.

Starkville Academy lost to Pillow twice during the regular season, 3-1 at home and 6-1 on the road.

Gardner doesn't believe the gap between winning and losing is too great for the Lady Vols to overcome.

"That's not a bridge too far to cross," Gardner said.
