Howard steps down as board president; Trainer takes over

October 16, 2012

Citing issues with personal time, Oktibbeha County Board of Supervisors President Marvell Howard relinquished his leadership position following Monday’s meeting.

The board unanimously chose District 2 Supervisor Orlando Trainer as Howard’s successor. Trainer, the board’s previous vice president, is the group’s most senior elected official. First-term Supervisor John Montgomery was elected board vice president. Both decisions resulted from unanimous votes.

Howard will remain District 3’s supervisor and said he will serve his constituents just as passionately as he did as board president.

“I’ve loved every minute of every second (serving as board president), but being president requires a tremendous amount of time,” Howard said Monday while announcing his plans.

Trainer said his new role will provide great pleasure by allowing him to continue serving the people of Oktibbeha County.

“It’s a great honor, but it’s also a great task to undertake,” Trainer said following Monday’s meeting. “When leading, you have to want to step out to the front because you cannot lead from behind.”

Montgomery said it is an honor to be chosen by his fellow representatives for a county leadership position.

“Marvell was a great board president and always kept things running smoothly,” Montgomery said. “Orlando and I have some large shoes to fill. I was offered the position and I was called to serve the people, so I’ll take the responsibility it brings.”

Both board appointments will continue through the year. At the beginning of each calendar year, supervisors vote on the two leadership positions.
