The Starkville Daily News has hired Starkville native Jason Edwards as part of its sports staff.
Edwards gained a Masters degree of Science in Sports Administration from Mississippi State University in August and received a bachelor degree of Science in Sports Communication from Mississippi State University in May 2010.
While in school at Mississippi State, Edwards worked as the track and field, cross country and men's basketball media relations assistant from August 2010-August 2012. He also worked as an intern in the area of event management and facilities from January 2012-May 2012.
In March, Edwards assisted with media relations for the Southeastern Conference Women's Basketball Tournament.
Edwards will have the primary responsibility of covering local high school sports for The Starkville Daily News. He began his duties on Monday.
"Jason's knowledge of Starkville and sports in general make him very qualified to coordinate the high school coverage for our newspaper," SDN sports editor Danny P. Smith said. "We look forward to having Jason as a part of our team."
With the addition of Edwards, staff member Ben Wait will move to the day-to-day coverage of Mississippi State athletics for the SDN.
Wait has spent the last nine months as the high school writer and provided coverage of Starkville High Schools Class 5A State championship in boys soccer earlier this year as well as the run for the Starkville Academy girls basketball team to the Class AAA-District 2, Class AAA and Overall State Championships.
"Ben has worked extremely hard in making sure the high schools in this area were covered fairly and accurately," Smith said. "He was always ready to step in and assist our coverage of the Bulldogs as well.
"Ben is eager to begin his new role as the full-time writer for Mississippi State and we believe he will do a fine job."
Wait takes over for Michael Wardlaw, who will be leaving the SDN in a couple of weeks. He is planning a move to South Carolina with his family.
"We appreciate the contribution Michael made to the Starkville Daily News during his time with us," Smith said. "He will be missed by our newspaper and the community."View more articles in:
