Starkville High School will be well-represented on the Mississippi team for the Mississippi-Alabama All-Star Game in December.
Not only will SHS head coach Jamie Mitchell serve as offensive coordinator for the squad, but he is taking quarterback Gabe Myles and defensive lineman Juwon Johnson with him.
The roster was finalized and announced in Jackson on Wednesday and Mitchell was pleased with how the process was handled.
"We've got 40 players and feel like we've got the right one's picked," Mitchell said. "We were able to take Gabe to the press conference and he enjoyed that part of it. We're very pleased to have Juwon on the team as well."
Mitchell said Johnson, at 6-3 and 295 pounds, was a hard player to miss.
"(Johnson) is one of those rare big guys that's gets off the ball well and that's hard to coach in a big guy, but a lot of that comes natural for him," Mitchell said. "He's the biggest defensive lineman that was taken in this game. He will have to nail the middle down for us, I'm sure."
Johnson, who plays on both sides of the football for the Yellowjackets, has 13 tackles this season, including two tackles for loss.
Myles said making the Mississippi-Alabama roster was a true honor and likes the fact that Johnson gets to share in the experience with him.
"It feels good to be able to make a team and represent the state of Mississippi," Myles said. "(Being) able to play in a really prestigious All-Star Game and being there with a teammate, it gives you the opportunity to go down there with someone you've been with for a while and it's good to know you have teammates there also."
Myles will be one of nine Mississippi State commitments on Mississippi's roster.
For the season, Myles has completed 40-of-84 pass attempts for 516 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions for SHS. He adds 170 yards on the ground and three more scores.
Along with the announcement of the Mississippi-Alabama roster, it was announced that fullback Stanley Higgins and defensive back Jacoby Smith will represent the Jackets at the Bernard Blackwell North-South All-Star Game on Dec. 22.
Mitchell was happy to see all four of his seniors receive All-Star recognition.
"They are four seniors who have been with me since the start and have been important in getting our program turned around," Mitchell said. "Thank goodness they chose to stick around when leaving would have been easy. They are four staples of our program and it couldn't happen for four better guys.
"It's a great honor for all four of those guys, so it will be a busy December for all of us."
