Bailey Williams will trade in her East Webster softball uniform for a new one. The senior was recently selected to participate in Saturday's Mississippi Slow Pitch All-Star game.
The senior for the Lady Wolverines glowed with excitement when thinking about being included on the All-Star roster.
âI take pride in wearing East Webster on my uniform,â Williams said. âI hold myself to a higher standard playing in this game because not only am I playing individually, but I am representing my whole team and the East Webster community.â
East Webster softball coach Lee Berryhill was not surprised to see his first basemanâs name among the best in the state.
âBailey is a real leader on our team,â said Berryhill. âShe may not be the most vocal member of the team, but she finds other ways to lead. She is the type of athlete that makes the whole team better.â
The love of softball came early for Williams, who credits her dad for teaching her everything she knows about the game.
âMy dad was always around, helping me improve through practice,â Williams said. âHe is truly my role model and I know I would not be where I am today without him.â
Looking at Williamsâ statistics for the season, it is clear she took what her dad taught her and put it to good use. Throughout the regular season, the senior batted .449, with 23 RBIs and 40 hits. Williams also acquired a .515 on base percentage and posted a .517 slugging percentage.
Even though she is busy preparing for All-Star competition, Williams paused to look back on the Lady Wolverines' 22-7 division winning season, a feat she considers to be the teamâs greatest accomplishment.
For now, Williams is focusing on Saturdayâs game where she will join athletes from all across the state as she plays for the A/2A/3A South team, but that has not stopped her from gazing a little further into the future.
âRight now, I want to continue playing softball, most likely on the junior college level,â Williams said. âAfter that I want to start preparing for a career in the medical field, most likely in the physical therapy area.â
Williams and her South teammates will take the field for game one at 1 p.m., Saturday, followed by a break for the 4A/5A/6A game one and a player introduction ceremony at approximately 3 p.m. Once the introduction ceremony is complete, Williams and her team will return to the field for game two.
Upon return from the All-Star game, Williams will rejoin her East Webster teammates to begin preparations for fast-pitch season which begins in February.View more articles in:
