The Starkville Academy Volunteers have faced some tough challenges throughout the season, but before they can begin postseason action, they have one more test in the form of Presbyterian Christian School tonight.

“PCS is one of the best teams in the state,” Starkville Academy head coach Jeff Terrill said. “They are No. 2 in their region, so they certainly bring a lot to the table.”

Though Terrill admits PCS possesses a tough, balanced offense, he is quick to mention that after reviewing film the Vols coaching staff feels their team is ready for the game.

“They are probably the fastest offensive team we will play all year,” Terrill said. “They play several wideouts and tailbacks, so they can place the ball in the hands of a lot of different people. It will be a struggle for us defensively. We need to play sound football and offensively, play ball control to keep them off the field.”

Starkville Academy may still have one game to play, but after last week, it knows where it stands heading into postseason action.

“Everything has been decided,” Terrill said. “We played East Rankin last week for the No. 1 spot and lost a heartbreaker, so they are No. 1 and we are No. 2.”

The Vols may already know where they stand, but that does not mean they are slowing down for tonight. Instead they are looking at this game as simply one more chance to improve and get better before the postseason.

“When the lights shine on Friday nights as an athlete you are always going to go out there and compete,” Terrill said. “On those nights, you always want to win, but in the process, you have to continually strive to improve and get tougher. Throughout the whole season, we have been focusing on getting ourselves better and that won’t change when we take the field (tonight).”

Kickoff between SA, which stand at 5-5 overall and 2-1 divisionally, and PCS, which is 8-2 overall and 2-1 in the division, will be at 7 p.m. in Starkville.
