It was an impressive start of the game and the season for the Starkville Christian Cougars at home Tuesday night.

After jumping out to a 21-5 lead after the first quarter, the Cougars saw the Jackson Victors come back to make it close in the fourth quarter, but earned a 72-62 win.

"It was good to come out and start like we did," Starkville Christian boys coach Alex Thompson said. "When they came back, we fought through a little bit of adversity and kept playing. We finished strong and got the win."

The Cougars established a 40-18 advantage at halftime as Jesse Little scored all 14 of his points in the first half. Starkville Christian was on top 55-38 after three quarters, but the Victors knocked the margin down to eight points twice at 68-59 and 70-62. The visitors did not get any closer.

Russell Davis, who led the Cougars with 25 points, scored at the end of the game to provide the final score.

"It's good to have him on our team this year," Thompson said of Davis. "He played really good (Tuesday night) and it was good to see that out of him."

Caleb Jordan was second in the scoring column for SCS with 19 points.

The game went down to the wire as the Lady Cougars almost had an opportunity to win at the buzzer.
Starkville Christian cut a 12-point lead by Jackson to two points in the fourth quarter on a 3-point field goal by Sydney Whitehead with 1 second remaining.

As the basketball came inbounds, it was deflected and the Lady Cougars were not able to get a chance for a winning shot attempt.

The Lady Victors led 14-8 after the first quarter, 20-11 at the half and 34-27 after three quarters.
Charity Morris scored 11 of her game-high 19 points in the second half for Starkville Christian, while Heather Koehn added eight points, and Jazlyn Douglas and Hannah Buckner chipped in seven points each.

Rebecca Galloway had 34 points for the Lady Victors.
