WEST POINT â€“ The Starkville High School basketball teams opened the season on Saturday at the West Point Classic and both dropped close games to Greenwood.
For the Lady Yellowjackets, their loss came in overtime 67-65, while the boys lost a 61-58 decision.
The SHS girls had a strong first half, leading 30-17 at halftime, but couldn't sustain it in the second half.
"At times, we did not do the things we needed to do, or get the key rebound," Lady Jacket coach Kristie Williams said. "Overall, I thought the effort was tremendous for the first game of the season. We have some exciting challenges down the road."
Kelsye Reed led Starkville with 23 points, while Blair Schaefer chipped in 18 points and Imane Montgomery added 17 points.
WEST POINT â€“ The Jackets also got off to a good start, but saw Greenwood come back for the win.
Starkville held leads of 15-10 after the first quarter and 35-23 at halftime, but Greenwood out-scored the Jackets 18-7 in the third quarter and 20-16 in the fourth.
"I thought we played well," SHS boys coach Greg Carter said. "In the second half, we lost focus and gave up easy baskets."
Veb Rice had 15 points to pace the Jacket attack, while Richard Evans contributed 13 points and Dontavious Self had 10 points.
The SHS teams have its home openers on Tuesday against Meridian.
Starkville Academy 67,
HAMILTON â€“ The Starkville Academy Lady Volunteers had to come from behind Saturday afternoon, but still managed to improve their record to 3-0 this season with a victory over Mississippi High School Activities Association member Itawamba at the Hamilton Tournament.
The Lady Vols trailed 15-14 after the first quarter and 31-24 at halftime before rallying to win the third quarter 18-6 and the fourth 25-13.
Starkville Academy hit 38 percent from the field (20-of-52) and 50 percent from 3-point range (5-of-10). The rebounds were even at 30 each as well as turnovers at 14 each.
Maggie Proffitt led the Lady Vols with 17 points, while Anna Lea Little added 16 points. Tiffany Huddleston and Sallie Kate Richardson also scored in double digits with 14 points each.

WEST POINT â€“ The Vols opened the season with a loss in the West Point Classic.
After staying close to New Hope through the first two quarters, only trailing 18-17 at the half, Starkville Academy was out-scored 14-10 in the third quarter and 15-12 in the fourth.
Caleb Merchant hit all eight of his shots from the field for the Vols and led the way with 16 points. Raheim Robinson also scored in double figures with 11 points.
Starkville Academy's boys won't return to action until they travel to Jackson Academy on Nov. 13.View more articles in:
