Starkville Christian girls win in overtime

November 9, 2012

Sometimes it's a good thing to take the advice of a brother.

Even though Hannah Buckner was struggling at times hitting her shot for the Starkville Christian School Lady Cougars, her brother and coach Luke encouraged her to keep shooting.

Hannah responded by hitting a basket just to the right of the goal to tie the game against Central Academy and sent it into overtime.

"It was the heat of the moment, but my brother told me that I needed to shoot," Hannah said. "I didn't know if it was going in when I shot it, but praise the Lord it went in."

The Lady Cougars were able to better the visiting Lady Vikings by one point in the extra frame and won a thrilling 47-46 decision at home.

It was the second victory of the season and in a row for Starkville Christian after defeating Grace on Tuesday.

"I'm very proud of them," coach Buckner said. "I told them before the game that they had to start thinking like winners in order to be winners. In the first quarter, they really didn't think like winners, but they came out the rest of the game and played like winners and I couldn't ask for more as far as that goes."

The Lady Cougars trailed Central Academy 8-4 after the first quarter and 24-21 at halftime. They fell behind by as many as nine points at 43-34 in the fourth quarter before battling back.

Starkville Christian went on a 10-1 run to close the quarter, mainly by hitting off the free-throw line.

Sydney Whitehead, Heather Koehn and Hannah Buckner hit a pair of free throws each, while Charity Morris had a basket to close the gap to 43-42.

After Blake Rigden hit a free throw for the Lady Vikings to up the score to 44-42, Hannah Buckner made the game-tying bucket.

"I told her at the first of the season that if you come out and miss the first 10 shots, you take the open 11 or I'm going to take you out," coach Buckner said. "I just wanted her to shoot it and she ended up finding it and it was crucial to the game."

In overtime, Maggie Hollister had the first points to put the Lady Cougars up 46-44 and Jazlyn Douglas iced the victory with a free throw.

SCS defended Rigden down the court in the closing seconds and she struggled to get a quality shot off.
Hannah Buckner and Charity Morris led the Lady Cougars with 11 points each, while Koehn also scored in double digits with 10 points.

Rigden had 25 points for Central Academy.
