Indians anxious to see competitive nature of team

November 12, 2012

ACKERMAN – Ackerman’s coach Gary Beals knows his team will be competitive during the 2012-2013 season, but just how competitive will be determined as the season progresses.

“You can only tell so much from practice,” Beals said. “Our competitiveness is just one of those things that we will have to wait and see what happens when we hit the court.”

Beals states that for the first part of the season the team will be missing some players who were out of pocket with the football team competing in the playoffs, but he is hopeful that when they return “some of that winning will carry over into this sport.”

“We really are not going to have a full team until after Thanksgiving, so my focus now is just to be competitive in the games until then,” Beals said.

One of those dual-sport athletes that the Indians are waiting on is sophomore Jamarcus Bradley, who the coach is excited to see on the court.

“Jamarcus Bradley is going to be the total athlete,” Beals said. “He stands out on the football field, so I am looking forward to seeing him perform on the court. Hopefully, he will turn out to be a good player for us.”

With such a limited roster, Ackerman is turning to its returning players for their experience and leadership to guide them through a challenging season.

“For leadership, we are going to depend on Lenny Taylor and Javorie Triplett, both guards who have been with the program for three years,” Beals said. “Tre Brown is also coming back on the inside. That will definitely help in that area and with the inside presence.”

With all of the question marks that are surrounding the beginning of the season, Beals does know one thing for certain.

“The key to our season will be to create turnovers,” Beals said. “We are going to have to press and get after it. We have to create scoring opportunities. This season is going to depend on us using our athletic ability to control the game.”

The Indians will get the chance to test their competitiveness today against Ethel.
