Opposing Viewpoint: Running game strong for West Point

November 21, 2012

The West Point Green Wave have one more Class 5A, Region 2 team to go through if they are to realize their goal of playing for a state championship.

West Point (11-2) knocked off Canton 38-0 and Ridgeland 56-21 in the first two rounds of the Class 5A playoffs and make the trip to Starkville Friday night to face the rival Yellowjackets for the North State title at 7 p.m.

The Green Wave have done most of their damage on the ground this season, averaging 277.5 yards per game as a team behind running back Aeris Williams and quarterback Tez Lane.

Williams leads West Point in the rushing department with 268 carries for 1,519 yards and five touchdowns, while Lane adds 1,261 yards on 191 attempts and nine scores.

It was the running game that helped the Green Wave defeat the Jackets 47-22 in September. Lane had 149 yards on 19 carries, while Williams added 102 yards on 20 attempts.
