SHS girls allow second-half goal in loss to Amory

The Starkville Lady Yellowjackets controlled the majority of their soccer match against the Amory Lady Panthers Friday night, but a late goal by the visitors made the difference in a 1-0 loss.

After Friday’s loss the Lady Yellowjackets fell to 3-4-3 overall, while Amory moved its overall record to 8-1-0.

“Honestly, we dominated most of the night, but we just got out of position at times,” Starkville girls coach Anna Albritton said. “Our defense just got out of position and their go-to girl got the ball, shot and she scored.”

As the clock ticked down on the first half, the score stood at zero for both squads, but that changed midway into the second half.

For the first 25 minutes coming out of the half, both teams attempted scores but were unsuccessful until Amory’s Addie Forbus found the goal.

Forbus’ shot managed to loft just over the out-stretched hands of Camryn Dawkins.

Dawkins may have allowed the winning goal, but the 8th grader had a stellar night making 12 saves.

“Cam is a beast,” Albritton said. "She gets the beast award for this week. She is only an 8th grader and I look to her being a captain and I look to her running the defense. I’ve got Alex Mazola who is a junior who also runs the defense, but Cam sees the game from inside the goal so I rely on her and what she sees back there.”

The Lady Jackets had 28 shots on goal chances compared to the Lady Panthers 16, but Starkville was unable to get the ball past the Amory goal keeper.

Hannah Laird led Starkville with eight shots on goal, while Forbus was the top shot taker for the Lady Panthers.

“This was the best game we’ve played all season,” Albritton said. “It was unlucky for us that they got that shot off, but this was by far our best game all season.”

Starkville continue its season on Dec. 14, when Neshoba Central comes to town.
