SHS wins road division basketball games

The Starkville Lady Yellow Jackets withstood a serious charge by the Murrah Lady Mustangs on Friday night and held on for a 42-41 Class 6A, Region 3 win on the road.

With the win, SHS improved to 11-3 overall and have won both of its division games so far this season.

The Lady Jackets trailed their hosts 7-5 after the first quarter, then outscored the Lady Mustangs 9-5 in the second quarter to take a 14-12 lead at halftime.

After winning the third quarter 13-10 to go up 27-22, SHS saw Murrah take the fourth quarter 19-15. The Lady Jackets played well enough down the stretch to bring the one-point decision back to Starkville.

Jalisa Outlaw led SHS with 14 points, while Amaya Ford and Amaria Strong added nine points each.

The Jackets outscored the Mustangs 20-8 in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

Starkville improved its records to 16-1 overall and 2-0 in Class 6A, Region 3.

Murrah jumped out to a 19-11 lead after the first quarter, but the Jackets cut the gap to 33-29 at halftime by outscoring the Mustangs 18-14 in the second quarter.

SHS inched a bit closer and only trailed 47-45 at the end of three quarters, then had the big 20-point final quarter with a defense that help Murrah to only eight points.

Zeke Cook, the OCH Regional Medical Center Athlete of the Week, was the leading scorer for the Jackets with 22 points. Jamarrion Brown added 13 points.

The Starkville teams will remain on the road in division play next Friday as they return to the Jackson area to play Madison Central.
