Starkville High School boys head coach Greg Carter could’ve asked for a better shooting performance.

The Yellow Jackets would race out to a double-digit lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back as they ran past the Madison Central Jaguars 78-48 in a battle of two undefeated teams in Class 6A, Region 3 on Friday night.

“We started out shooting it well against their zone," Carter said. "Third quarter came around and we found a rhythm on both ends of the floor. Everybody was making shots. Normally it's one or two guys making shots but (Friday night) it was everyone. We hadn’t hit a stride like that since the middle of December. This was a huge game with both teams 2-0 in the region and we needed this win to stay in front of everybody else.”

Starkville (17-1, 3-0) held a 38-24 lead at halftime but outscored Madison Central 23-11 in the third quarter to pull away.

Tyler Talley had a game-high 15 points to lead Starkville, while Zeke Cook added 14 points and Jarmarvious Phillips had 11 points.

Jalin Rice had 10 points to lead Madison Central (12-9, 2-1), who saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end.

“Starkville is a very well disciplined team and tonight they shot the three ball really well,” said Madison Central coach Tim Speech. “Our game plan was to go inside and use our size to an advantage, but tonight they shot us out of our zone and out executed us.”
