SENATOBIA – While participating in the Magnolia Heights Tournament, the Starkville Academy Volunteers knocked off Class 5A public school Hernando 44-42.

“(It was a) big win for us and for our confidence,” Starkville Academy boys coach Mark Alexander said. “We had a slow start, but picked it up during the second half.”

After the first two periods, Hernando was on top by four as the team carried a 22-18
lead into the locker room.

The Volunteers took control during the second half as they led 35-28 heading into the final 8 minutes of play.

The game was tied at 42 with 11 seconds to play as Brandon Sharp stepped to the
charity stripe. Sharp was perfect in his attempt to give Starkville Academy the lead and victory.

Carnail Minor led the Volunteers with 17 points, going 5-for-8 from behind the arc. Brandon Lane was the second leading scorer as he provided 10 points after coming off the bench.

“Anytime Carnail hits his shots, it gets our team going," Alexander said. "Brandon Lane coming off the bench giving us points was huge.”

Starkville Academy’s win places it in the championship game where they face Magnolia Heights.
