It may not have been a perfect game for the Starkville Lady Yellowjackets in the first game of 2013 Tuesday night, but it was pretty good.
The Lady Jackets jumped out to a 25-9 lead after the first quarter against the visiting Aberdeen Lady Bulldogs and went on to secure a 66-29 victory at home.
"Being the first game of the second half of the season, to be a home game and come out and play as hard as we did, it was great," SHS girls coach Kristie Williams said. "At the end of December, we lost a tough one. To come back and practice hard like we did and to get this win, it feels good to get the first win under our belt."
Point guard Blair Schaefer scored the first five points of the game with a basket and free throw at the 7:26 mark of the first quarter and another hoop 30 seconds later.
She agreed with her coach that the Lady Jackets wanted to set a positive tone for the new year.
"We came out really strong and wanted to start the year off with a win," Schaefer said. "It's always nice to win at home. When we are at home, we need to get those wins."
Schaefer also made a pair of free throws to close the first quarter as Starkville started the second quarter by outscoring Aberdeen 12-2 to really take control of the game.
The Lady Jackets led 46-18 at halftime.
In the second half, SHS turned up the defense even more and only allowed 11 points, while playing mostly reserves.
Imane Montgomery led the Lady Jackets with 14 points, while Schaefer and Kelsye Reed added 11 points each.
Starkville struggled shooting the basketball from the field overall by hitting 24-of-64 for 38 percent, but held Aberdeen to 24 percent (11-of-46).
The Lady Jackets had 30 turnovers, but forced 34 Lady Bulldog miscues.
"We can always find something to build on to get ready for the next one," Williams said. "With Yazoo (city) coming up, that is another district game so we've got to get a little bit more of our kinks out. On the road at Yazoo is going to be a tough environment."
Starkville makes the trip to Yazoo City Friday night for the Class 5A, Region 2 outing.View more articles in:
