MSU hires Townsend to the football staff

January 11, 2013

Mississippi State head football coach Dan Mullen has been busy this offseason with hiring assistant coaches.

"This time of the year you always have that happen," Mullen said in his Friday press conference of coaching changes. I mean, it's, I guess, the crazy season in college football. We're really excited about all the new guys coming in here."

On Friday, he may have finished all of his offseason hirings.
Mullen and Mississippi State announced that Deshea Townsend was hired to coach the cornerbacks.

Townsend takes over for Melvin Smith who left MSU to take a similar position at Auburn.

Townsend has spent the past two seasons on the Arizona Cardinals staff. He worked with Cardinals' cornerbacks and nickel backs.

"Deshea will bring an energy and excitement to our defensive backfield and entire team," Mullen said in a school release. "His experience in the National Football League is valuable, and his roots in Mississippi made him an obvious choice for our program."

Townsend played his high school football at South Panola in Batesville. He played both offense and defense for the powerhouse Tigers. During his senior season, Townsend accounted for 1,800 yards of total offense and 18 touchdowns. He also led the Tigers to a Class 5A State championship in 1992.

"It's great to be heading home again," Townsend said in a school release. "Coach Mullen and his staff have built a solid program and I'm excited to join the team and hit the ground running."

After high school, Townsend then went on to start four years (1994-97) for the Alabama Crimson Tide at defensive back. He earned first-team All-Southeastern Conference honors following his junior campaign in 1996.

Townsend was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1998 NFL Draft. He was taken in the fourth-round and was the 117th overall pick. Townsend spent 12 years with the Steelers and won two Super Bowl rings. He helped the Steelers win Super Bowl XL in 2006 and Super Bowl XLIII in 2009.

He spent the 2010 season with the Indianapolis Colts.

During his NFL career, Townsend appeared in 191 games, had 80 starts, had 428 tackles with 359 solos, intercepted the ball 21 times, had 15.5 sacks, three touchdowns, five fumble recoveries and four forced fumbles.
Townsend joins defensive line coach David Turner as the two new hires on the coaching staff.
