Starkville Academy's Drew Pellum can throw a football well and he's also pretty good at kicking a soccer ball.

When it came time to chosing a sport for the next level, Pellum picked baseball and he's taking that talent to Mississippi Delta Community College.

Pellum signed earlier this week and celebrated the moment Friday morning at the SA's media center with family and friends.

Pellum has enjoyed playing all sports for the Volunteers, but there was no hesitation in expressing which he likes the most.

"Baseball has always been my favorite," Pellum said. "I know I have a better future in baseball."

Mississippi Delta assistant coach Zach Zulli is happy that Pellum will be a part of the future of the baseball program.

He looks forward to using Pellum's skill on the mound.

"He's going to be a pitcher for us and we want him to focus on that," Zulli said. "That's where we think his brightest potential is. He has a bright future there and we expect him to throw hard, throw strikes and with his athleticism, we know he is going to be able to field his position and have everything you need as a college pitcher.

"We're very excited about Drew. He's a very good athlete. He's a great person and that's the top of our recruiting list. I know he's going to represent our program and everything with class and do things the right way."

Pellum said he chose Mississippi Delta because of the coaches and believes they give him the best chance to advance to the next level.
Starkville Academy baseball coach Neal Henry has two reasons to be proud this week.

Not only does he get to see one of his players advance his career, but Pellum's destination is the same place where Henry played.

"I'm excited for him and very excited to have someone go where I signed," Henry said. "The sky is the limit for Drew. When you are athletic in high school, you can focus on a lot of sports. When he gets up to the next level and can focus on one sport, there's no telling how much potential he can have."

Before going to Mississippi Delta, Pellum has the soccer season to finish and looks to help the Vols have another good season on the baseball field.

Pellum wants to relish every moment of his senior season and make improvements on the mound before he moves on.

"I just want to locate a little better and try to keep the ball down in the zone," Pellum said. "I want to get there and get in the starting rotation."

Henry is anxious to use the experience Pellum has as Starkville Academy makes another run toward the Class AAA State championship series where it was last season.

"We're definitely counting on him going into his senior year on the mound and in the lineup," Henry said.
