EUPORA – There was an early morning wakeup call for a couple of Eupora Eagles on National Signing Day.

At approximately 8:15 a.m., Derrick Jones and Lazerick Davis announced that they would be attending the University of Mississippi and East Mississippi Community College, respectively.

Jones enters Ole Miss following a stellar senior season that saw the wide receiver compile 975 yards receiving for 15 touchdowns. On the defensive side Jones, recorded 39 tackles, while bringing down six interceptions. Thanks to his impressive numbers, Jones closed his senior campaign with a spot on the roster for the Mississippi-Alabama All-Star Game.

“(I) couldn’t ask to have gone out in a better way,” Jones said. “(Coach Junior Graham) meant a lot to me. He took me from a young, immature boy to a mature man.

“It is truly a blessing to have an opportunity to be a part of all this with such a good coaching staff, not only in high school but as I go on to my college level. I know that I have coaches that stress the family word and they are just going to push you hard every day.”

As a running back, Davis takes his talents to the Lions on the heels of a season where he posted 112 carries for 705 yards and four touchdowns. He also took turns on the Eagles defense where he recorded 32 tackles and four interceptions.

“Being at Eupora has been a good thing,” Davis said. “It is a big step right now. It just changed my life. Being committed to EMCC feels great. I want to help out the team and be a team player.”

Jones and Davis have been quite the dynamic duo for Eupora and Graham knows that he has some big shoes to fill moving forward.

“(Derrick) has meant a lot to our program, especially as a senior,” Graham said. “He had an outstanding senior season on the field. In the field house, he provided a lot of leadership that we needed. It is just always exciting as a coach when you have an opportunity to see your kids go on and play at the next level. By him signing with Ole Miss, it proves that his hard work is paying off.

“Lazerick is different in that he has been solid throughout his whole career. He did a lot of things behind the scenes that a lot of times go unappreciated. He is a good football player and I think that when he gets his opportunity to prove that at the next level I think he may open some eyes.”
