Mrs. Mary Sue Heyer, 85, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013 at Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth.
A memorial service was held Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013 at McPeters Inc. Funeral Directors Chapel with Dr. Prentiss Gordon Jr. officiating.
She was born May 3, 1927 to the late Neal and Maxine Morrison. Mary Sueâ€™s journey in nursing began following graduation from Corinth High School when she joined the United States Cadet Corp Nursing School. She attended Birmingham Baptist Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1948, and was honored with the Doctorâ€™s award, the highest award given to a graduating nurse.
Wanting to continue her education, she applied and was accepted to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Mo., associated with Washington University, to attend anesthesia school. After completing the anesthesia program in 1952, she returned to Corinth and became the first and only certified registered nurse anesthetist at Community Hospital. In 1954, she left nursing to mary the late Richard Heyer and raise her family. At the age of 52, she returned to nursing, working for 25 years before retiring. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Corinth.
She is survived by her children, Dr. Rich Heyer (Amy) of Tupelo, Peggy Sprouse (Todd) of Memphis, Tenn. and Nancy Miles (Van) of Starkville; sister, Peggy Thomson of Starkville; grandchildren, Tays, Jake and Rich III Heyer, Taylor (Heather) Shelby, Paige Spouse, Kelly, Roy and Porter Miles; and great-grandchild, Brantleigh Sprouse.
