CANTON – Starkville High School's boys basketball team was trying to extend its season as long as it could Tuesday night.
The Yellowjackets knew that a loss would be the end of the campaign and they were not ready for that to happen, so they fought through two overtimes.
Even though Starkville took the game into the extra frames, it still came up short to Canton 60-59.
The Jackets entered Tuesday’s contest with hopes of securing their 10th win of the season, but after dropping the game they saw their season end with a 9-14 record.
From the very beginning, Starkville and Canton were engaged in a tight battle.
After leading 16-7 following the first period, Canton cut the lead to one with the Jackets clinging to a 24-23 lead as the halftime buzzer sounded.
Third period competition was just as tight as its previous, but Canton held the advantage heading into the final period as it led 39-38.
The final moments of the game were intense as Starkville and Canton battled back and fourth to a 47-47 tie with 2 minutes remaining. Neither team was able to find the basket during those last couple of minutes as the game entered overtime.
Things did not slow down at all during the first period of free basketball and after the additional minutes, the teams were deadlocked at 53-53 and the game progressed into a second overtime.
Playing on their home court was beneficial to Canton as it managed to slightly edge the Jackets during the last moments of the game.
Caleb Wilson was the leading Starkville scorer with 16 points, while Raphael Leonard was next with 10 points.View more articles in:
