CANTON – It wasn't the type of start that the Starkville Lady Yellowjackets were looking for, but the finish was more to their liking.
Even though the Lady Jackets lost a 58-51 decision to homestanding Canton in the finals of the Class 5A, Region 3 Tournament, they came back to make a run, only to see it fall a bit short.
Starkville fell behind Canton 14-5 after the first quarter, but the Lady Jackets were able to cut into the margin a bit and only trailed 26-19 at halftime.
By scoring 14 points in the third quarter and 18 more in the fourth, Starkville found a way to stay in the game.
The Lady Jackets couldn't use the momentum to come all of the way back and ended up losing by the seven-point spread.
"We got off to a slow start, but if you look at the second half, we had it tied 32-32 and went up by one late in the game," SHS girls coach Kristie Williams said.
Blair Schaefer poured in 32 points for the Lady Jackets, while Imane Montgomery chipped in 10 points.
Despite the loss, the season will continue for the Starkville girls. With an overall record of 15-8, the Lady Jackets travel to New Hope in the first round of the Class 5A North Tournament Monday night.
