JACKSON – The Starkville Academy Volunteers found a way to come back and win when it seemed like they were beaten.
The Volunteers (17-15) beat Washington School 67-65 in the consolation game of the Class AAA, Division II Tournament Saturday night at Hillcrest Christian School.
SA's Bradley Weseli hit a 3-pointer at the end of the first overtime to send it to a second. Carnail Minor heaved one in the second overtime at the buzzer to send it into a third overtime.
The Volunteers trailed by six points in the final overtime, but overcame the deficit to claim the No. 3 seed in Division II.
"We were dead in the water so many times," SA head coach Mark Alexander said. "Somehow we found a way to win."
The Vols were led by Minor's 20 points. Brandon Sharp added 18 points.
Starkville Academy will face Madison-Ridgeland Academy in the Class AAA State Tournament next week. The tournament will be held at Jackson Academy.
