The Mississippi State baseball team had all the reason in the world to dance Friday night.

The No. 12 (Collegiate Baseball) Bulldogs battled through a 94-minute rain delay filled with dancing by both teams to beat Purdue 3-2 in game two of the Diamond Classic presented by Polk's Meat Products at Dudy Noble Field.

"We played a very solid Purdue club and I know we didn't score may runs, but I thought we took a lot of good swings," MSU head coach John Cohen said.

MSU is now 6-0 for the first time since 2006.

The Bulldogs and the Boilermakers (3-3) found themselves tied a 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth.

MSU junior Alex Detz lead off the bottom of the eighth with a walk. Junior Derrick Armstrong pinch ran for Detz. He stole second and advanced to third on a bad throw by the catcher.

Freshman Jacob Robson pinch hit and hit a line drive shot to left field. The left fielder caught the ball and tried to throw out the tagging up Armstrong. Armstrong slid in to home head first for the winning run.
When the ballgame went into the rain delay, MSU had two on with two outs. Senior catcher Mitch Slauter was hit by the very first pitch by Purdue pitcher Mike Lutz to load the bases.

Lutz hit the very next batter, MSU junior outfielder Hunter Renfroe, to force home Adam Frazier to make it 2-1.

Lutz was pitching before the rain delay, but Purdue head coach Doug Schreiber elected to leave him in.

The Boilermakers answered back in the top of the eighth inning. Kyle Wood doubled home Brandon Krieg with two outs to tie the game at 2-2.
MSU brought in sophomore closer Jonathan Holder to get the final out in the eighth inning. He struck out Sean McHugh looking for his sixth-straight punch out to end the top of the eighth.

Holder (1-0) pitched 1.1 innings to get the win. He struck out three of the four batters he faced. He got a slow ground ball to first base by Jack Picchiotti to end the game. Holder has struck out 11 of the 14 batters he has faced this season.

McElroy (0-1) took the loss for the Boilermakers.

Renfroe tied the game at 1-1 when he hit his fifth career and third Dudy Noble home run over the left center field fence in the sixth inning. He now has a six-game hit steak to start the season.

Purdue took an early 1-0 lead on McHugh's RBI fielder's choice in the top of the sixth inning.

MSU starter Jacob Lindgren 5.1 innings. He gave up one run on three hits. He struck out six and didn't walk a batter.

MSU left two runners on base in the fourth inning after Tyler Fullerton was hit by a pitch and Demarcus Henderson walked.

Lindgren retired 11 consecutive batters when he got the final two outs in the first inning to the end the fourth inning.

Purdue starter freshman left hander Jordan Minch went six innings. He gave up one run on four hits. He walked three batters and struck out five on 102 pitches.

The Boilermakers got two hits from Krieg.

The Bulldogs were led offensively by Adam Frazier who had two hits and leads the team with 10 hits this season. Renfore led MSU with two RBI.

MSU will be back in action today with a doubleheader. The Bulldogs play Samford at 3 p.m. and Purdue again at 6 p.m.

Junior righty Evan Mitchell is slate to start for State against Samford, while senior right hander Kendall Graveman gets the start against Purdue.
