Bulldogs make trip in league

February 24, 2013

The Mississippi State women's basketball team has won four of its last seven games in the Southeastern Conference and have turned some heads in the process.

As the league heads down the stretch run of the season, seeding in the SEC Tournament will be determined.

The Bulldogs (12-14 overall and 4-9 SEC) are trying to inch their way into the middle of the pack of the conference.

"We've put ourselves in a position, so we've just got to keep playing and find that next win," MSU coach Vic Schaefer said. "Where it is, I don't know, but we've got to keep hunting and pecking for it."

The next opportunity for the Bulldogs comes today on the road against South Carolina. The tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.

MSU lost a 60-46 decision to the Gamecocks at home in January, but Schaefer knows what his team must do to pull off a victory in Columbia, S.C.

The Bulldogs found the formula in the last time they played in a Columbia - a 61-56 win at Missouri.
"To win on the road, you've got to steal somebody's spirit, (and) you've got to dominate them with your heart," Schaefer said. "That's what we did when we went to Missouri."

MSU gained confidence with victories over Missouri on the road and Ole Miss, Arkansas and Alabama at home.

Schaefer understands opponents will step up their play because of what the Bulldogs have done.

After knocking off Alabama in dominating fashion, Schaefer expects South Carolina to plan accordingly.

"This will have their attention," Schaefer said. "They had the night off (Thursday). It seems like everyone we play has the week off before we play them. We'll get ready for them.

"We're coming down to the end and it's a good time to be playing well. I'm glad we're back playing like we should be playing and we just need to continue to build on it."

Martha Alwal and Kendra Grant lead the Bulldogs in scoring with 12.2 points per game each.

Aleighsa Welch paces the attack for the Gamecocks by averaging 12 points and 7.8 rebounds per outing.
